History ​
The r/UBC subreddit has been around since May 06, 2009, and has since grown to have tens of thousands of users, including students, professors, staff, and other community members.
The c/UBC Fediverse community was created in June 11 2023, after Reddit made changes to their API which limited access to the site and limited tools used for moderation and accesibility. We created the backup community on a lemmy.ca, which has since incorporated into a Canadian non-profit and makes up a part of the federated network of social media websites. The platform exists as an ethical alternative to Reddit.
This backup community is managed by the same team from r/UBC, and it is available for any users that would like to use it. Should there be any issues with Reddit in the future, this backup community is the place to regroup and discuss.
This wiki was initially started by moderators of the /r/UBC subreddit, and individual articles were written over the years on topics that were frequently asked about. In 2023, it was turned into an open source project and this wiki website was officially launched 🥳
